SAC
The Essex Estuaries Special Area of Conservation (SAC) covers over 46000ha and was designated under the EC Habitats Directive. The area was designated due to the presence of habitats listed on Annexe I of the Directive, including estuaries, mudflats and sandbanks, Salicornia and Spartina swards and Atlantic salt meadows. Habitats listed on this annexe are those believed to be most in need of conservation at a European level.
The SAC extends from Lion Point at Jaywick down to the Thames estuary near Southend.
