Water quality in the Colne estuary

Information request from Anglian Water and the Environment Agency

In response to concerns raised by several CEP members at recent meetings in relation to the water quality of the Colne, it was decided at the last Advisory Group meeting that a letter should be sent to request information relating to several water quality issues.

These included aspects of water quality under the EU Water Framework Directive, sewage treatment issues and concern over the effect of water quality on important shell fisheries, as well as potential effects to recreational users of the Colne.

The letter produced can be seen here. The letter was sent to the Environment Agency, Anglian Water, all our local councils and our local MP's, Bernard Jenkin and Bob Russell.

Bernard Jenkin MP has forwarded the letter on to the Secretary of State for the Environment, Rt Hon Hillary Benn MP. A copy of this letter can be viewed here.

A response has been received from the Environment Agency addressing all points raised, and these will be presented for discussion at the next Advisory Group meeting, and the response letter is now available to view here.

A question by question breakdown with replies from the Environment Agency and Anglian Water can be seen here.
